Self Defense for Women in Tyler at Gracie Barra Tyler

Updated: Nov 22, 2022

Today we talk with Claudia, a mother (and GB blue belt!) who discovered her own passion for Jiu-Jitsu through being exposed to martial art through her son. There are many reasons to train jiu-jitsu and Claudia shares her own positive experience.

"To any woman who that maybe interested in trying a class, I would encourage them to try! " Claudia

GB: Claudia, let's begin by introducing you. How did you start training Jiu-Jitsu at GB Tyler?

Claudia: Hello, my name is Claudia. My family and I have been living in Tyler, Texas, for 6 years. When we initially moved to Tyler, I wanted my son to join jiu-jitsu. Since then, I have been a jiu-jitsu mom for 5 years, but I personally started practicing myself a year and a half ago.

GB: What were the reasons you first decided to try the Jiu-Jitsu classes? Have you discovered any new reasons that you enjoy Jiu-Jitsu after you got into it?

Claudia: In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic began, GB Tyler began to implement socially distant classes. For students to participate, they would need a dummy or a family member. I wanted my son to get the most out of each type. Therefore, I became his personal dummy.

By participating, I discovered that jiu-jitsu is a great learning environment where everyone can have fun, get a great workout, and develop new friendships by tapping them out!

GB: What have you learned about Jiu-Jitsu as a means of self-defense for women who have considered learning some self-defense martial art?

Claudia: In self-defense, jiu-jitsu is a great asset for women because it applies to real-life scenarios. Most importantly, I thought initially that I had to be stronger than my attacker to defend myself. However, I have learned that it does not matter how strong you are; you just need to know the techniques and use the attacker’s weight against themselves.

GB: Are there any other benefits that you have experienced as a result of your training at GB Tyler?

Claudia: Throughout my time at GB Tyler, I have gained something valuable through my jiu-jitsu journey: physical fitness, confidence, and stressrelief. However, something more unique I have gained is lifelongfriends.

GB: Lastly, what would you say to any woman who is thinking about trying a Jiu-Jitsu class at GB Tyler?

Claudia: To any woman who that maybe interested in trying a class, I would encourage them to try! This sport is truly inclusive and can accommodate anyone’s physical fitness level.
